Solicitors websites - choosing a content management system.
23rd August 2012
Given that commissioning a new website is usually an infrequent event in a solicitor’s career, it is worth noting a few pitfalls to avoid.
- You should not need to pay on-going (usually monthly) fees. When comparing the cost of website quotations (see our article on this) take care to look at the costs over 3-5 years.
- Beware of firms offering “blogging” packages such as Wordpress. Whilst these are popular amongst web designers who use them all the time and may be suitable for the simplest of websites, they have a number of limitations and are not “intuitive” for the non-web designer.
- Even less intuitive, and very difficult to use for the non-web designer are a number of open-source systems such as Joomla.
When selecting a content management system, unless you are a large firm with a dedicated web-master you will need to ensure that it is easy to learn, easy to use and that support is readily available in the form of training, notes and telephone support.
As well as asking for a demonstration, ask to speak to other solicitors who are using the system to see if they are finding it user-friendly.
